We would like to add an Flight Mechanics Engineer to our on-site team, with emphasis on dynamics, modeling, simulation, and flight mechanics. The work will be performed at NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA.

Job Description

The key responsibilities of this position will be to provide day to day support of modeling and simulation tasks related to next generation spacecraft, launch vehicles, and entry, decent and landing systems. Work to be performed supports conceptual and detailed vehicle design and analysis of both Earth and planetary based missions. Key technical areas include:

  • Dynamic simulation and analysis of spinning spacecraft.
  • Modeling and simulation of vehicles with flexible structures.
  • Monte Carlo simulation and sensitivity analysis.
  • Multi-body simulation development and analysis.
  • Subsystem modeling and validation including inertial navigation systems, actuators, and equations of motion.
  • Test and flight data reduction including filtering and estimation.
  • Guidance, navigation, and controls design and analysis including stability and performance robustness assessments.

Education and Qualifications

  • An aerospace engineering background and strong skills in dynamics, simulation, and controls.
  • Knowledge of stability and control, optimization, filtering and estimation, optimal control, and predictive modeling (data mining) are highly desirable.
  • M.S. in aerospace/aeronautical/mechanical engineering or B.S. degree with industry experience required.
  • Advanced knowledge with Matlab/Simulink, FORTRAN, and C/C++ programming needed.
  • Familiarity with ADAMS and POST-II software desirable.
